Kyle McAvoy grew up in his father's small-town law office in York, Pennsylvania. He excelled in college, was elected editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal and his future has limitless potential.
But Kyle has a secret, a dark one, an episode from college that he has tried to forget. The secret, though, falls into the hands of the wrong people, and Kyle is forced to take a job he doesn't want—a job most law students can only dream about.
Three months after leaving Yale, Kyle becomes an associate at the largest law firm in the world, where, in addition to practicing law, he is expected to lie, steal and take part in a dangerous scheme that could send him to prison, if not get him killed.
With an unforgettable cast of characters and villains—from Baxter Tate, a drug-addled trust-fund kid and possible rapist, to Dr. Dale, a pretty but seemingly quiet former teacher of mathematics who shares Kyle's “cubicle” at the law firm, to two of the most powerful and fiercely competitive defense contractors in the country—and featuring all the twists and turns that have made John Grisham the most popular storyteller in the world, The Associate is vintage Grisham.

This is the second Grisham book I've read.
It was very well written, the characters were well developed, and I couldn't put it down.
I was disappointed with the ending, however,
as it left too many questions unanswered.
At the same time, the decisions Kyle makes at the end were very reassuring,
Overall, it was an interesting- if scary -inside look at a mega law firm, and a satisfying read I would recommend it highly.

Not only was this hard to read but it was a total failure in the mystery class. Everything in this book pointed toward a great ending. The bad guys getting caught and punished but this book didn't do that. This book had the lamest ending of any book I have read My favorite Grisham book was Testament but that book had a nice ending. This book didn't end, it wandered off into ambiguity and left us standing at the altar wondering where our bride went and leaving us clueless. Would be nice to have Grisham give us an apology for this piece of drivel.

I've read all of Grisham's books, and "The Associate" was like discovering him all over again.
I was surprised by how much I loved this book. I was actually sad when it ended, but hopeful, the character of Kyle will get another action packed story in Grisham's next book.
John Grisham is definitely the Master of Mystery.

As a big fan of his early novels, I keep reading his
latest ones, but am constantly let down. This one was
one of the most disappointing ones yet. It started out great, hence the two stars, but the ending left me
saying "huh"? Would recommend you pass on this one.

Grisham pulled me in with his usual rapid pace and twists, but then me left me hanging. While I liked the story in the beginning, I could help but wonder why this kid was making such bad choices. He, so obviously, seemed to have several ways out. The path he chose made for a good story - but with a giant letdown. Not like the "old" Grisham.
