In the land of Middle-earth lives Bilbo Baggins, a respectable member of a race of little people called hobbits. Now, like many of his kind, Bilbo cherishes comfort and spurns adventure of any sort. But that will all change when Gandalf the wizard scratches a sign in his door, and the hobbit is besieged by thirteen ravenous dwarves. The next thing he knows, Bilbo is off on a perilous quest to reclaim a stolen treasure from the dragon Smaug, a quest that will lead him to trolls, elves, goblins, shapeshifters, spiders, a creature named Gollum and a very magical ring....
Seventy-five years after its original publication, The Hobbit remains as fresh and evocative as the day it was published. Originally intended to entertain Tolkien’s own children, it has been beloved through the decades by young and old alike, and is today considered one of the most important books in the fantasy genre.
Why? Perhaps because the world of The Hobbit was built on a plausible foundation and operated by rules readers could believe in. Tolkien drew on his knowledge of early English languages, mythology and runic magic to give his land of Middle-earth a history and logic that not only sustains readers’ beliefs, but which has influenced countless imitators. And he did it all with peerless wit and style.
The prelude to The Lord of the Rings and a classic fantasy in its own right, The Hobbit is J.R.R. Tolkien’s first masterpiece. Join Bilbo on his enchanting adventure!
This edition contains all revisions and corrections that have been made since the original publication and includes endpaper maps and b&w illustrations by Tolkien himself. Jacket art by Donato.

I have seen the movie, the various animated representations, but the book is just awesome! A true classic. It is old school fantasy, but it has a gripping story, monsters, adventure and great dialogue. If you like dragons, dwarves, wizards, trolls and battles, you gotta read this over and over.

The Hobbit is a tale that I will always hold near and dear to my heart. My father first read it to me when I was around five years old and I have had a love of fantasy in my heart from that point forward. The time that we spent together journeying with Bilbo and Company in their quest to the Lonely Mountain is one of my treasured childhood memories and I cannot talk or think about Tolkien without bringing up fond images of my Dad.
Luckily, the story also holds to the test of time. It is a fast-paced, sometimes humorous, adventure story with an almost continual stream of action. The poor party seems to go from one peril to the next to the next in such rapid succession that it is truly one of those books that is almost impossible to put down for any significant span of time. The characters, especially dear old Bilbo, are lovingly crafted and presented to the reader in such a way that they become stamped into the memory for all time.
Truly one of the greatest stories of all time and forever one of my favorite books. If you haven't read The Hobbit, I cannot recommend it more highly to readers of all ages, levels, and interests. (And IF you haven't read it yet, I envy your fledgling journey into the magic lands of Middle-Earth!

I have loved this story for decades and I still read it at least once a year. Every member of my family has this book as well. I just hope the movie doesn't ruin the original story the way they usually do. The movie is never as good as the book! It seems that so many young people don't read any more, they just see the movie, or play the video game. But this story is timeless, and I love it. love the trilogy too. You have to read them all, to understand Middle Earth.

It's Tolkien, it's Bilbo, it's the ring. Six stars. It's the perfect prequel to Lord of the Rings. And yes, it's a little bit more kid-oriented than the later trilogy. But I'm pretty sure that was the point, and it's a good thing. On it's own, or as a prequel, no matter, this is one of the best fantasy books of all time.
