Author Letter
Dear SFBC member,

This is, hands down, the most challenging book I've ever worked on.  I'm a life-long fan of the series, having read Eye of The World way back in 1990 when it was first released in paperback.  These characters feel like old friends from my childhood, ones I've watched grow up as I did so.  But even still, with all that familiarity, this project has proven to be difficult like nothing I've ever done before.

The complexity of the side-plots, the wealth of worldbuilding, the weight of foreshadowing, the amazing depth of characterization...  It was like stepping up to direct a full orchestra in the middle of a movement, being handed the baton and told to keep them going without a break in the music.

My main goal has been to preserve the spirit and soul of this wonderful series, to make it as little about 'me' as possible and as much about Mr. Jordan's original vision.  There was a reverence to it that I can't quite describe.  This is the last legacy of one of my dearest heroes in life.  I think it turned out beautifully, but I suppose you--the readers--will have to be the final judge of that.

Excerpt to come...

Vol. 12: The Gathering Storm

When Robert Jordan met his untimely demise in 2007, he had only partially written the concluding volume of the long-running Wheel of Time series. To complete the book, Jordan’s editor and wife, Harriet McDougal, chose Brandon Sanderson, the bestselling author of the Mistborn saga. But Jordan’s swan song was so vast it couldn’t be contained within a single volume. Hence: The Gathering Storm, the first of a trilogy comprising A Memory of Light.

In this epic novel, Rand al’Thor—the Dragon Reborn—struggles to unite a fractured network of kingdoms and alliances against the Seanchan encroachment northward...while his allies watch in terror the shadow that seems to be growing within Rand himself. Egwene al'Vere, a captive of the White Tower and subject to the whims of their tyrannical leader, works to hold together the disparate factions of Aes Sedai while providing leadership in the face of increasing uncertainty and despair. As the days tick ever closer to the battle foretold, the five friends from Emond's Field—Rand and Egwene, Nynaeva al'Meara, Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara—prepare to fulfill their destinies and face the great conflict that will decide the future of the world.

Sanderson did it!
March 26, 2010

I was concerned with the transition from Jordan to Sanderson, but I have to say I am VERY happy with The Gathering Storm. Aside from a bit of shortchanging storylines in the opening chapter, the book almost perfectly continued the grand saga that Jordan created and nurtured over the years. All the characters are recognizable as themselves, and their storylines were carried forward and moved towards the final battle very well (with the exception of the quick end to a certain troublesome character in the prologue). There seemed to be one or two points where events were aluded to that weren't covered in this book (or any of the previous ones), but I'm fairly certain that they will be resolved in the next book. As other reviewers noted, the movement towards the final confrontation between good and evil seemed to stagnate in the last few books, and Sanderson got the story moving again full steam towards Tarmon Gaidon. I whole heartedly recommend this book to those who have followed the series. If you haven't been following, buy the entire series... you will NOT be disappointed.

Fantastic
March 25, 2010

Having been a Jordan fan for over a decade, I was pretty worried about the transition. My concern was completely unwarranted. Sanderson's style is somewhat different, and at first, some of the characters aren't quite as mature as they were with Jordan. Just a few chapters in, however, and the characters and story shine brighter and brighter. Great book! And it's nice to see story lines starting to close, instead of opening new ones so close to the end of the series. :)

Outstanding Continuation
March 22, 2010

Having read all of Mr Sanderson's preious works, and, in particular the Mistborn Trilogy, I was not the least surprised at his ability to continue in the traditional footsteps of Robert Jordan with this work for The Gathering Storm. He picks up on the story line and follows through with the epic adventure complete with keeping the characters in their original context and adds new characters in the same focus and intent that Jordan himself would have done. An excellent read and I look forward to the story to continue.

Harriet can Pick'em!
March 22, 2010

After reading "The Gathering Storm", I could not think of any other author I would have wanted to complete Jordan's Masterpeice. The story pick up pace quickly, and I quickly forgot that Jordan did not complete this himself. I wait with eager anticipation, for the remaining two volumes to complete this vast fantasy! I have since purchased 4 other Sanderson books, and have been deeply drawn into the Mistborn series. Brandon has an uncanny way of developing his characters, in a way that draws you in, always wanting more. I look forward to his future works.

Awesome storyline - writer did way better than expected
March 22, 2010

I purchased this book as a collector's item because this is the last transcript of Rober Jordan, however I was skeptical about it, wondering if it would live up to what I have grown to expect from Jordan. Brandon did a wonderful job of pulling this book together. I felt the emplosion looming long before the event. I was right there along with the characters most of the way thru the book. I can't wait for the next one.
